Working with a customer on a migration from file shares to M365 - that part is pretty standard. What stood out is the question they asked...something that everyone always asks:

It does not matter whether your system of choice is Box, iManage, or file shares. The big question of coverage is always the same.
"Coverage," meaning a way to protect the entire information ecosystem with policies, tactics, and rules.

How Much of Your Content is Actually "Covered"?
When we analyzed the data a couple of weeks ago, the results were eye-opening. 50% or more of Documents, Files, Media, and Records are outside the scope of the Cyber Security best practices.
And when we asked you to show us where the data was wrong, no one disagreed. The consensus was:
“Yeah, that is just how it is. File Shares are not dead. People still use them. A lot. Our stuff is everywhere, and we are spending a lot of money trying to consolidate it.”
